Jitney, Wilson's earliest play, was written in 1979. It takes place in 1977. Set in the Hill district of Pittsburgh, where Wilson grew up, the play centers around a gypsy (or jitney) cab station. Through the conflict of impending demolition and the reunion of a jitney driver and his estranged son recently released from prison, Wilson presents a group of workers unified by their pride, humor and hardship.

Schoolgirl directed by David Petrarca concerns a clique of high school girls who, in their to the-death competition to land a class hunk, try to attain a perfect size 4 by any means necessary. The play examines the mores of teenage society and the madness of applying "magazine model" perfection to the real world.

Based on true events, Let Me Live explores the plight of Herndon, an educated and communist-leaning activist who is thrust into this sub-human environment, where the brutality of the oppressive society outside has turned the inmate-victims into self-loathing monsters. The initially optimistic Herndon tries to organize his comrades, but he is stymied and ultimately defeated by a degraded climate that prevails both in and outside the cell. The playwright's main point is that when the justice system treats the incarcerated as animals, that's precisely how they will behave.

Directed by Henry Godinez, Straight as a Line is a non-traditional comedy-drama. The description from the Goodman press release: "Paulie's mum is visiting him in New York. They've had a lovely morning getting Paulie's nipple pierced, and as they wait for the subway, Paulie informs us he's decided to jump in front of a train, a fact his mum calmly confirms."

A Raisin in the Sun is a Chicago-based drama and the first drama written by an African-American woman, Lorainne Hansberry, to be produced on Broadway. The Goodman Theatre's revival was directed by Chuck Smith and starred Harry Lennix as Walter Lee.
